The Story of DESCO

Milwaukee is hundreds of miles from any ocean coast but the city has played a critical role in the development of commercial diving equipment. Diving Equipment & Salvage Company (DESCO) was formed in 1937 as the manufacturer of the newly designed diving equipment by Max Nohl and Jack Browne.

Between 1836 and 1850, Wisconsin’s population increased from a mere 11,000 in 1836 to over 305,000 by 1850. Most arrived by ship and the North Point Lighthouse was the first thing they saw when they arrived in Milwaukee.
