Charles Allis Art Museum

August 18, 2020 – December 27, 2020

Women operating outside of economic centers are often overlooked not only by the regions which overshadow them, but within their own localities, further distancing the women of future generations from the histories of their own communities. The Milwaukee Women’s Art Library (MWAL) attempts to provide a solution to this issue by developing a library and archive founded on principles of solidarity, difference, and action. Curated by Milwaukee native and Chicago-based curator Ashley Janke, the MWAL will open in August 2020 at the Charles Allis Art Museum, preceded by numerous meetings and work sessions to bring the new library together. The MWAL will act as a space for the collective remembrance of women and non-binary people of all ethnicities whose actions, work and narratives may otherwise become lost in the ebb and flow of the constantly shifting cultural landscape.

The Milwaukee Women’s Art Library (MWAL) will be collecting and organizing materials from women-identifying and non-binary artists and arts organizers. Visitors are also welcome to visit the MWAL and ask questions during this time. Those who wish to donate materials may bring exhibition cards, gallery guides, writings, sketches, audio and video materials, photographs, etc. to be entered into the library. Guidelines for material donations can be found on the MWAL website. The library will also be open to anyone to view and engage with materials already collected. FREE.
